Macrame Cords

Macramenia is proud to be the only online source in the world that offers macrame plant hangers using the 3 most popular cords – jute, hemp, and nylon (polypropylene).

The type of cord you choose depends on how and where you will be using your hanger(s). Any of the 3 materials will make excellent, durable indoor plant hangers with the possible exception of jute in extremely humid environments.

Here are some facts about each type of cord and their recommended uses:

Jute is called “The Golden Fiber” due to its natural luster. Despite being the least expensive of the materials, it is a surprisingly strong cord. Indoors, it should last for decades, although it may “yellow” with time if exposed to a lot of direct sunlight. Jute does have a decreased strength when wet and becomes subject to microbial attack in very humid conditions; therefore, it is not recommended for outdoor use unless it will be in a dry climate and protected from precipitation, such as on a covered porch.

Hemp is also a very sturdy, durable, natural cord. It has a smoother look and feel to it than jute. The fibers are characterized by their superior strength and resistance to mold and mildew, making it ideal for long-term indoor use, even in moist climates. It should not be exposed to extensive precipitation outdoors, as it is known to deteriorate under such conditions.

Nylon (polypropylene) is perhaps the most durable of the 3 materials. The soft and flexible synthetic material holds knots well. It is especially recommended for outdoor hangers that will be directly exposed to precipitation without cover. All cords can eventually break down if exposed to a lot of moisture but the nylon should last the longest. Polypropylene can be affected by sunlight deterioration, but its life can be extended by reducing its exposure to direct sunlight.

Regardless of what material is selected for your macrame plant hanger(s), I strongly recommend that you use a saucer under the pots, even outdoors. This will protect the bottom of the basket from the inevitable moisture that occurs when watering plants.

If you have any feedback regarding your experience with various macrame cords under a variety of conditions I would love to here from you!

- Susan
